Homeopathy

A gentle medicine that stimulates the body's natural abilities.
Homeopathy

Homeopathy, its principles and benefits for well-being, attract nearly one in two French people, making this approach one of the most popular complementary medicines in France. Founded 200 years ago by Dr Hahnemann, a German physician, this practice is based on two fundamental principles: the law of similars and the principle of dilution.

We observe that homeopathy is often used for minor ailments such as colds and allergies, but also for chronic conditions such as sleep disorders. Indeed, homeopathy for sleep is an appreciated alternative for many patients, notably because of the low risk of side effects due to the extreme dilution of remedies. With more than 300 different strains derived from plants, animals, or chemistry, the solutions for improving sleep quality are varied.

In this article, we will explore the foundations of this alternative medicine, how it works, its potential benefits, as well as its limitations. Although homeopathic treatments have no longer been reimbursed by Social Security since 2021, their popularity persists, and we at Hello Soins, a premium appointment-booking platform for alternative medicines, wish to shed light on this subject that arouses as much interest as debate.

The foundations of homeopathy

Founded in the 18th century, homeopathy was born from the innovative mind of Dr Samuel Hahnemann, a German physician seeking alternatives to the often dangerous medical treatments of his time. The term derives from the Greek words "homoios" (similar) and "pathos" (suffering), perfectly reflecting its fundamental philosophy.

Origin and definition

The history of homeopathy began precisely in 1796 when Hahnemann published his first observations in the "Journal de médecine pratique". His fundamental discovery came after he experimented on himself with cinchona bark, used against malaria. He then observed that it caused in him, while in good health, symptoms similar to those of the disease it treated. This personal experience gave birth to what we now call homeopathy.

Principle of similars

This founding principle, also known as "Similia similibus curentur" (like is cured by like), forms the heart of homeopathic practice. According to this approach, a substance that causes certain symptoms in a healthy person can, in infinitesimal doses, treat those same symptoms in a sick person. For example, belladonna, which in high doses causes redness and a feeling of heat, can be used in homeopathic dilution to treat conditions presenting these symptoms.

Principle of dilution

The second essential characteristic of homeopathy is the extreme dilution of substances. Hahnemann developed this approach to reduce the toxicity of compounds while preserving their therapeutic properties. Homeopathic preparations therefore undergo a process called "dynamization" combining dilution and succussion (vigorous shaking). Common dilutions include CH (Hahnemannian centesimals), where each step dilutes the substance to one hundredth. Thus, a 30CH remedy has undergone 30 successive dilutions, making the presence of the original molecules in the final solution mathematically unlikely.

Notion of water memory

To explain the effectiveness of such highly diluted remedies, some advocates of homeopathy refer to "water memory". This theory suggests that water retains an electromagnetic imprint of the substances it has come into contact with, even after their physical disappearance. The succussion process would be crucial to "imprint" this information into the solvent. Although controversial in mainstream scientific circles, this notion remains central to the theoretical justification for the action of highly diluted homeopathic remedies.

These fundamental principles help explain why homeopathy for sleep uses substances that, in high doses, would cause wakefulness, but which, when diluted, promote sleep according to this particular therapeutic logic.

How does a homeopathic treatment work?

The homeopathic consultation differs considerably from the conventional medical approach in its methodology centered on the individual rather than on the isolated disease. During a session, the practitioner seeks to understand the full range of physical and psychological manifestations in order to develop a truly personalized treatment.

Consultation and homeopathic profile

The homeopathic journey begins with an in-depth consultation. Unlike standard appointments, the homeopath devotes considerable time to questioning the patient. During this crucial step, the physician explores not only the current symptoms, but also family history, complete medical history, and lifestyle. This detailed questionnaire also looks at character, dietary preferences, and emotional reactions to events.

The goal is to establish what specialists call the "homeotype" or "homeopathic profile", defined by a set of distinctive physical and psychological signs indicating a predisposition to developing certain illnesses. This profile serves as the basis for the long-term or "constitutional" treatment.

Personalization of the remedy

Following this overall assessment, the practitioner determines the remedy suited to the patient's profile. Homeopathy offers individualized treatments because it takes into account the individual's reaction to illness. Thus, two people presenting the same symptoms may receive different remedies depending on their profile.

This personalization concerns not only the choice of medication, but also its dosage, frequency of use, and duration of treatment. It is up to the healthcare professional to determine the indication and dosage according to the patient's specific characteristics.

Available forms of medication

Homeopathic medicines come in various pharmaceutical forms. The best known are:

  • Multi-dose granule tubes (about 80 granules per tube)

  • Globule doses (smaller than granules, single-dose)

  • Oral solutions

  • Ointments, gels, and suppositories for specific applications

These preparations are generally taken under the tongue away from meals. Some remedies are single agents (made from a single strain) while others are complexes combining several homeopathic active substances.

The benefits of homeopathy for well-being

Among gentle medicines, homeopathy holds a special place in the hearts of French people seeking complementary approaches for their daily well-being. As healthcare professionals at Hello Soins, we observe growing interest in its potential benefits.

Holistic approach to the patient

One of homeopathy's major strengths lies in its holistic vision. Unlike conventional medicine, which often targets the isolated symptom, the homeopath considers the person as a whole. This approach takes into account physical manifestations, but also emotional and psychological dimensions. Thus, two patients presenting the same symptoms may receive different treatments depending on their constitution and how they feel.

Relief without side effects

The extreme dilution of active substances is probably the most recognized advantage of homeopathy. Indeed, this characteristic considerably reduces the risk of adverse effects and drug interactions. This relative harmlessness makes homeopathy an appreciated option for people sensitive to conventional medicines or those wishing to avoid certain side effects.

Strengthening the immune system

Rather than directly fighting symptoms, homeopathy aims to stimulate the body's natural self-defense mechanisms. This approach stimulates the immune system so that it reacts more effectively to attacks. Consequently, certain homeopathic remedies are particularly popular during seasonal changes or periods of fatigue.

Homeopathy for sleep and stress management

Faced with sleep disorders, many people turn to homeopathy. Strains such as Coffea cruda, Passiflora, or Ignatia amara can help restore restful sleep without creating dependence, unlike certain sleeping pills. In fact, on our Hello Soins platform, we see significant demand for consultations related to stress and sleep difficulties.

Improvement in quality of life

In daily practice, homeopathy fits easily into a wellness routine. Its simple use and gentle action make it a valued complement for managing the minor ailments of everyday life. Nevertheless, for optimal effectiveness, it is still preferable to consult a trained professional who can precisely determine the remedies suited to your specific profile.

Limitations and precautions to know

Despite its undeniable popularity, it is essential to objectively examine the limitations of homeopathy and to know the precautions for use. This knowledge allows for an informed use of this therapeutic approach.

Lack of solid scientific evidence

Scientific studies conducted over several decades have not been able to demonstrate efficacy of homeopathy superior to that of a placebo. The Scientific Council of the European Academies of Science (EASAC) confirmed, in a report published in 2017, the "absence of solid and reproducible evidence of the efficacy of homeopathic products". Likewise, the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council concluded in 2015, after analyzing 225 studies, that homeopathy was no more effective than a "sugar pill". In France, the High Authority for Health judged in 2019 that the medical benefit provided by homeopathy was insufficient, which led to progressive delisting until 0% in 2021.

Placebo effect and controversies

The beneficial effects sometimes felt can be explained by the placebo effect, a phenomenon recognized in medicine. A study published in 2005 in The Lancet, comparing the effects of homeopathic products with those of a placebo, concluded that the former were no more effective than the latter. Homeopathy's success may lie in the fact that it represents an "attractive, simple, safe, easy to understand system centered on the patient as a whole". Moreover, "the interaction between doctor and patient" would play an important role in the observed results.

When not to use homeopathy

According to experts, "homeopathy should not be used to treat chronic, serious, or potentially serious conditions". For serious illnesses such as cancer, homeopathy can be used as a complement but never as a replacement for conventional treatments. Indeed, "people choosing homeopathy could put their lives in danger if they were to refuse or delay the choice of a treatment whose effectiveness and safety have been proven".

Self-medication: to be done with caution

While homeopathic self-medication is common, it should remain limited to low dilutions and mild disorders. It is recommended to:

  • Not persist if improvement is not rapid after a few days

  • Consult a doctor quickly if symptoms persist or worsen

  • Inform your practitioner of all treatments you are taking

At Hello Soins, we facilitate connections with qualified professionals who can advise you on the appropriate use of homeopathy, possibly in addition to other therapeutic approaches.
